Madison is on the phone when Norm lets himself into the apartment. By the time the Foreign Desk gets done with Madison’s story, everything is on the table: a bottle of Ekstra, Orlovsky sour rye, a jar of horseradish, two hundred grams of sliced bologna-like† sausage, two hundred grams of mortadella-like sausage,‡ a similar amount of Ukrainian fatback, cut up in chunks, radishes sharing an oval plate with a modest pile of green onions. Also on the table are three bowls, the first of which contains pickles, the second marinated mushrooms, and the third Provençale cabbage.

“What is all this?” asks Madison, looking tiredly at the table.

“What does it look like to you, Madison?”

“I fixed myself a peanut butter sandwich while getting reamed out by the Foreign Desk. I’ll need to turn in early—you suit yourself.”
